INTRODUCTION
MCS successfully delivered the building envelope works on the new Arrivals Terminal at Bristol Airport, working in partnership with Lancer Scott and liaising closely with the modular contractor delivering other elements of the project.
The terminal expansion forms part of a major development to improve passenger capacity and facilities at the airport. Delivered within a live airside environment, the works required rigorous planning, strong supply chain collaboration, and in-house design expertise to meet strict safety and technical requirements.
SCOPE OF WORKS
- In-house design of building envelope details, including junctions and flashings.
- Installation of Kingspan KS1000RW roof panels and KS1000MR AWP wall panels.
- Integration of Siderise fire barriers for fire compartmentation.
- Fabrication and installation of AKV flashings and perforated rainscreen.
- Supply and installation of Fixfast fixing systems.
- Airside logistics and access management using Ardent telehandlers and Summit Platforms scissor lifts and cherry pickers.
- Close coordination with the modular contractor to ensure interfaces between systems were correctly sequenced and delivered to specification.
- Collaboration with supply partners to provide bespoke and compliant solutions.
SUPPLY CHAIN
- AKV – Flashings and perforated rainscreen
- Ardent Hire – Telehandlers
- DA Profiles – Bespoke profiles
- Fixfast – Fixing systems
- HSS – Plant hire
- IRP – Cladding support systems
- Kingspan – KS1000RW roof and KS1000MR AWP wall panels
- Sealprem – Sealants and gaskets
- SIG – Insulation and ancillary products
- Siderise – Fire barriers
- Summit Platforms – Scissor lifts and cherry pickers
Solution
The MCS in-house design team developed precise detailing to address complex junctions and ensure compliance with both thermal and fire safety performance requirements. Bespoke profiles from DA Profiles and Trifab were integrated to achieve exact fitment and architectural finish.
Given the modular build components forming part of the terminal, MCS worked closely with the modular contractor to coordinate design and installation interfaces. This ensured seamless integration between modular and traditional elements of the structure.
Operating in a live operational airport required strict logistics planning; material movements and installations were phased and coordinated to minimise disruption to airport operations, while maintaining the highest levels of health and safety.
Unforeseen site conditions were managed through flexible budgeting strategies, ensuring project resilience and maintaining delivery standards. The project also provided valuable lessons in subcontractor communication, leading to the adoption of enhanced coordination tools for future builds.
Outcome
- A technically demanding project was completed on time and to specification within a challenging live airside environment.
- Effective liaison with the modular contractor ensured seamless interfaces and a fully integrated terminal facility.
- The new terminal provides modern arrival facilities and contributes significantly to the airport’s long-term development.
- MCS reinforced its reputation for delivering complex, design-led envelope solutions while strengthening internal processes around budgeting, design integration, and communication.
